I'll admit that I did not handle Anita's arrival here as well as I should have, and I might be falling into the same trap with the new warden. Kirei? Have you met him?

I met him and his daemon, yes. [An angry black swan. It's mildly worrisome.] Why? He's a priest but I don't think he actively hunts vampires.

Only because we are not on his world. Only because external rules tells him not to. And it is not simply vampires, I believe.

[He sighs. There's more. So much more, but he has to trust Lark with everything.]

It's more complicated than that. He's from Archer's world, Lark, though he is much younger than when Archer knows him. And while I do not agree with Archer right now in that we should blame him for things that he has yet to do, I can see how his path might lead to the atrocities Archer describes him doing. Especially if he is relying on outside influences to guide his moralities.

[That complicates things.]

You're right that we shouldn't judge him on something he hasn't done yet, but maybe it would help to reframe the way you see him. Kirei is not here to be punished for those things. He's here so he can learn how to stop them from even happening.

Can you tell me some of what he 'did' to Archer's world?

[This is why he's come to Lark first thing. Godric is wise. Calm. But he knows that he can be blinded when it comes to Archer and his own people. And when he thinks about Dancy coming in contact with this man calling himself a warden but believing these things - it worries him immensely. He needs this reframed outside of his own vampiric mindset.]

He fought Kirei once against allowing curses from coming out of the Holy Grail. And - Archer said he had taken children into the basement of a church. Still alive somehow as living, rotting, corpses, to feed another Servant.

[Dry:] This is one of those times I wish wardens had files so we could steal his to see what's going on under all that.

Archer would have a hard time with you getting to know Kirei better, wouldn't he?

[Not that Lark usually cares about what's difficult for someone. He tends to think 'difficult' is more reason to do it.

But he cares about Archer. If there's a way around causing him immediate hurt, he'll do it.]

Archer is worried for me, but I've already spoken with Kirei. He's the other warden in the chapel, so we can hardly avoid each other. I do not think we will be friends, but I can certainly try and be civil with him. To get to know him.

I think it might help both of you to find out what his deal is. Hell, I need to know what it is now. [Lark isn't the most morally flexible warden on board anymore? He's actually quite pleased about that.]

I won't tell you to have faith in the Admiral. I'd caution against it, to be honest. But I do believe Kirei is here to find another way to get something important, and that something isn't more war crimes.

Don't forget, Archer has an advantage here that he wouldn't at home: Kirei is here because he's unable to get whatever he's after on his own. He has chosen the Barge because it's either the fastest route, or it's the only route and he's desperate. And the only way he gets to move forward is by learning to help someone.

I don't trust the Admiral with anything. Not anymore.

I am worried about the learning to help someone. The ones here without a deal do not deserve to be fodder for a warden to learn how to be a good person.

But - [And here's a sigh.] I suppose then it becomes our job to offer our own help.

I'll stay involved with him. I planned to anyway, I think all new wardens could use a more experienced hand to help them get settled. I'll let you know if something comes up that we should jump on.

Good. I'll do what I can from my side, as well. I think it will be beneficial to have someone there, too.

Watch out for the more religious inmates. There have been an influx of religious figures on board.

I'm going to warn Nadja and Lazlo, only because of their unique weaknesses against religion and give them nothing more than that, but I don't sense a need for anything widespread.

I went my whole stay as an inmate without religious figures around and now they make up a percentage of the Barge. [It's nuts.]

I haven't heard from Archer in a while. Should I approach him about this or let him come to me?

No. Let me see if I can convince him to talk to you. I need to...confess that I've spoken with Kirei anyway.

How did the talk with Kirei go? In general terms if you don't want to give specifics.

[For example:] He seemed very restrained when I met him. He's aware of the...anger, I suppose? that's in his soul but he was willing to be ruthless with it to hold it back.

We spoke mostly about religion. His religion and the ones I knew in the past. He gave me the impression that I passed onto you and - that's what concerned me.

I expressed my concerns to him in general terms and he was slightly defensive, but I talked him out of it, I think.

I kept trying to remember that my interaction with him would be tainted by what I already knew of him, and, while it might give me an advantage over him, that would hardly be fair.

When someone might use undead children for their own gain, fair isn't something I'd worry about.

But from the moment he arrived here, he became a different version of the man Archer knew. The last thing Archer needs is to inadvertently make Kirei into the man he knew.

I know.

That's what I'm worried about but that is not a conversation I am willing to have right now.
