spam; the last journal post

[Getting on board was a moment of chaos. He remembers turning a corner, expecting to find fur and blood in his mouth, expecting maybe to get torn up in return, expecting maybe a bullet from above to take him down, too-

But instead he's somewhere metal, somewhere that smells of strangers and strangeness, and he's bleeding a trail but he runs for safety anyway. If there is any. If there are doors, anywhere, that he can open without changing back, because this has to be the FBI's work and so long as they think he's just a wolf, maybe they won't slit him open and poke around inside.
]

[ooc: Lark is a wolf, for now. He'll have to change back sooner or later even if he doesn't want to, so feel free to tag him as human or wolf, just lemme know which.]

[He nods.] Just let me know if you need more time.

[But, barring anything to the contrary, he'll be there in an hour, knocking and waiting to be let in.]

[Steve agreed to this and he's not backing out, whatever it means, so he's not fazed in the least.] Sounds fair. I have a little experience, but I know it's nothing like yours.

[After all, try waking up in a time when people speak mostly the same... but really don't, with strange slang and automation where you don't expect it. He's also at least gotten a taste of other cultures from his time in Europe, but it's like he says - it's not like what T'Pol or even Lark deal with every day, so he won't pretend it is.] Thanks again for your help.

[Steve nods - difficult or not, it's worth the effort. And if they both want it to help, it stands a better chance, he figures. Besides, Lark's taking a big risk doing this, and that counts for a lot. Steve, at least, is bound and determined to do just what he promised - not to take it personally. He's actually very experienced at that one.]

Sure, sounds good.

[He looks around, because of course he's a little curious, but only looking around in the sense of he finds the nearest table to lean against or chair to perch on and looks around the room from there, nothing more.]
punched_hitler: [tfa] ([pre-serum] kind of curious)

[Steve waits as patiently as he can, and while he can hear something, it's definitely not clear what it is (he'd know, if he could hear clearly, but he can't). It sounds a little more like muffled shuffling, at best.

And whether this is serious or not, he can't help but smile a little, when the wolf comes trotting out, because,]
Before everyone stops taking everything personally, you are a pretty handsome fellow.

[He doesn't mean it like that, but you are a good-looking wolf, if that's, you know, a thing?

But then he pushes up off the chair arm he was leaning against, into a fully standing position, and he's ready to get... whatever this is started.]

[Steve's no expert in animals, but that's a pretty obvious signal, right there. Or - well, funny enough, it's not, in a way, because it doesn't tell him what to do to fix it, of course, and he kind of thinks that's the point.

Part of him also thinks that Lark might actually bite him, if he needs to, and - that's good. Steve wouldn't blame him, because the point of this exercise was, admittedly, not to treat it like an exercise. Just like if he ends up having to defend himself, he doesn't expect Lark to take it personally, either.

He doesn't jump, to his credit, but he does tense. His first instinct is, of course, to pull his arm out of the way, but that could also be seen as a threat, he thinks, so while he does start to jerk it back, he consciously stops, opens his palms, and takes a step back, looking at Lark, although he is trying to keep track of how much distance there is between him and the nearest wall, mainly because,]
I'm not very good at getting backed into corners. For the record.

[He doesn't know that Lark's listening - oh, he has no doubt he can understand him, but that doesn't mean he's really taking anything Steve says into account. All the same, talking is just a thing Steve does, and he's not making any exceptions now unless he sees that it's a bad idea.]

[And here's the difference between now and the last time he was this size - he's learned, instinctively, how to take a fall; instead of just being hauled to the ground, Steve manages to curl and roll to the side a little, provided Lark lets go of his shirt at all on the way down.

His first instinct after that is to reach for - well, there's no shield on his back, and it's a strange, aborted motion that he makes.

He's just starting to look for something else to use to block any more blows or snaps - again, instinctual, when you've been fighting for years - when he stops. Tries to think, which doesn't happen as quickly as it would've with the serum, which is meant to accelerate his thought processes during a battle, but Steve was no slouch in the mental department, before. It just takes longer to click, and Lark might have time to move on him in the meantime.

But… Lark didn't invite him here to spar. And that's what Steve's trying to do - to defend himself, to find an opening to hit back. But that's not the point. They're here to show Steve how hard it is to figure out what someone wants, when they can't say it in a way you'd understand.

He's still on the floor, still starting to reach around for something to block those teeth when he stops, and tries looking at the wolf.]
You want me down here. Don't you?

[Instead of crouching, he moves to just sit on the floor, instead. Maybe it's not a smart move, with a snarling wolf in your face, but maybe it's the right move. If it's not… Steve's been practicing his kicks.]

[Steve, of course, can't read the gesture, but it's a more promising one than being snapped at again, so he's more confident that he read the action right.

At least, until Lark rushes at him, and it's not going to be the least bit hard to knock Steve over. He manages to take the fall (fortunately, there isn't far to go) on an elbow instead of his head; again, he tenses, starts to bring his arms up. Every time in the past that he's been shoved to the ground, it's with the intention of having his face punched to a bloody pulp, or worse. It's hard to overcome those reflexes, but the lack of snapping does help.

He glances up, trying to relax, although he'd like to at least prop himself up on his elbows, given that,]
I don't think you're telling me to take a nap.

[This time, he's not as clear on what the desired result is, but he doesn't try to get back up again, at least. He's making eye contact with Lark, though, even if it's from down here.]

[Part of it's probably the fact that, quite frankly, Steve has never been the sort of man - the sort of person - to submit to anybody. It's not in his nature; hell, get enough of his history out of him, and you'd learn that he's pretty shitty and following orders, too, despite the fact that he'd wanted nothing more his whole life but to be a soldier, like his father.

So it's going to take that pressing, on Lark's part, but at least snapping teeth do get points across fairly well. The weight on his chest pushes Steve down easily, and it's a clear enough sign that he stays put. But it takes longer for him to stop looking Lark in the face, even from down there - but finally he rolls his eyes up to the ceiling, deliberately looking straight ahead and not at the wolf snapping less than a couple of inches from his nose. He doesn't like it - it's severely uncomfortable to look away from a threat, or even from someone he's trying to respect - but all this pressing is finally, finally starting to make him think Lark doesn't like Steve looking at him.]

Okay, I can stare at the ceiling instead, but… you were right, I definitely don't understand. Is this better?

[He sounds a little apologetic, but not sorry - because he's not sorry Lark is doing this for him, but it is a little frustrating to not understand why he has to do something.

But that's sort of the point. So he'll get over it.]

[That's probably wise - he might be able to get that across eventually, but it would definitely take a lot of time and effort.

Steve does relax, minutely, when the snarling stops and the weight leaves his chest, taking a couple of deep breaths (well, what passes for deep breaths, these days). He doesn't relax fully, but that's just what comes from being in battle and never fully letting yourself relax when there's a potential threat around, even if this body doesn't have the same heightened level of awareness and response to adrenaline that he's gotten so used to. He stays on the ground for another couple of breaths, a little wary that if he gets back up, Lark's just going to push him back down again.

Eventually, though, he starts to push himself up, glancing over to Lark - although it's with this flicker of his eyes that kind of says he'll look away again, if that's what Lark wants. You're still the bossman - bosswolf.]

[When moving doesn't seem to be a problem, Steve does sit up; when Lark leaves the room altogether, he stands up, although he's aware that even if Lark comes back into the room as a human, this isn't over. He said it would be more involved than that, and Steve took him at his word.

So he's not necessarily surprised, when Lark comes back in with much the same expression Steve envisioned he wore as a wolf; Steve's used to being brushed off, and he's also used to not letting it bother him. Suffering it in silence never did him any favors, nor is it the point now. He doesn't approach Lark, just stays put, watching him, the air he exudes. He's definitely in charge in a way Steve can respect.]
I can see why you're so good at what you do.

[As a lawyer... but as a wolf, too.]
