[The first thing Lark does is follow his nose. He gets himself some food, enough to clear his mind, and then finds a quiet corner up on the deck where he can watch the universe drift by. He watches the network first, making cursory judgments of the people there. And then he turns the camera on himself.

He's not sure any of this is real, but it's always safest to pretend it is. If it's real to these people, it needs to be real to him.]

[Lark is stunned. He's a fairly large wolf himself--not bulky, but lean and long--and he's nothing to sneeze at. But this wolf is huge.]

You must be absolutely fearless. What's her name?

A girl is. [And she walks over, the camera shaky but the focus still on the wolf, until Arya sits down, leaning against her side. Only then does she turn the camera on herself.]

She's Nymeria. Does a man know the story?

I don't. Would you tell it to me? I can tell you about my wolves.

I believe that nothing is possible without a woman. A female. Males can be good, but they will never be exceptional without a female to guide them.

No, I'm a lycanthrope. But I guess now I'm just a coyote- er, a lone wolf. My pack dissolved.

[He's quiet a moment, expression hard but not angry, no longer hurt.]

They died, most of them. Another pack moved in, and I wasn't watching close.

[She goes quiet, at least for a moment. Losing your pack is hard. She knows what that's like.]

[A shrug.] I don't know. I think they're born that way.

[He smiles softly, silent but poignant gratitude for the sympathy.]

If you could become one...would you want to?

All the time. [She likes to wear Nymeria's skin, to walk about the ship in her pony-sized direwolf. It's comforting.]

You should ask Nymeria if it's possible.

Maybe a girl already has.
